Elven princess Amberle runs the Gauntlet, a race to choose the seven servants of the sacred tree, but when she touches it she has a terrifying vision.

Having seen a vision of the end of the world, Amberle leaves her grandfather's palace to seek advice from Eventine's sister Pyria at Wing Hove.
