The arrival of the Viking fleet causes panic among the population of Paris. The Emperor Charles declares in Court he will remain in the city while the defence of Paris is in the hands of its Commander, Count Odo.

The Viking army sets out and Paris goes into lock-down as the army prepares the defence, overseen by Odo; the Vikings are determined to make it through the gates of Paris and will stop at nothing to succeed.

Emperor Charles is left to make a difficult decision as the Vikings hit Paris with a second attack. Back in Wessex, Judith is forced to make a difficult decision of her own.

Ragnar and Lagertha's fleets depart Kattegat once more for Wessex and this time they bring a group to colonize there. King Ecbert hosts the Norsemen and proposes a deal. Despite the misgivings of some of the other leaders, Ragnar leads his forces into battle once more, but this time as allies of Wessex.

Lagertha and Athelstan help to establish the Viking settlement in Wessex. Harbard, a mysterious wanderer, arrives in Kattegat, realising the forewarned dreams of Aslaug, Siggy and Helga.

As Ragnar lies in his sick bed in Kattegat, events unfold beyond his control. Meanwhile, Bjorn orders the arrest of Floki for Athelstan's murder, Rollo betrays his supporters to strengthen his position, and Kalf announces joint Earldom with Lagertha.

Ragnar and Floki are still at odds; Rollo makes great attempts to win over his new bride, Princess Gisla; Bjorn's survival skills are put to the test; King Ecbert sets the task for his son Aethelwulf to rescue Queen Kwenthrith.
